What is PAIA?

The Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) is a South African law that gives everyone the right to request access to information held by public and private organisations. The Act promotes transparency, accountability, and good governance by making it easier to access information, unless there is a lawful reason to withhold it.

What information does the Act cover?

PAIA covers records and information held by organisations, including documents, emails, reports, contracts, policies, minutes, electronic records, and other recorded information. Some information may be withheld to protect privacy, confidential business information, security, or other rights protected by law.

How do I access information?

If you would like to access information held by Ithala, simply:

  • Complete the prescribed PAIA Request Form.
  • Submit the form to our Information Officer.
  • Include enough detail to identify the information you are requesting.
  • We will process your request in accordance with PAIA and notify you of the outcome within the timeframes set by the Act.
